Concept

On the morning of March 13, a signing ceremony for the wind assistant rotors of six 325,000DWT ore carriers was held at China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Beihai Shipbuilding). Luo Le, General Manager of Beihai Shipbuilding, Dr. Zhou Weixin, Vice President of the China Ship Scientific Research Center (hereinafter referred to as CSSRC), and Dr. Huang Guofu, General Manager of China Shipbuilding Shanghai Marine Energy Saving Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as CMES-Tech) attended the ceremony.

Technology Competition

Beihai Shipbuilding, in order to fulfill its new shipbuilding contract for six 325,000DWT VLOC ore carriers owned by Shandong Shipping Corporation and rented to Vale, Brazil, organized a global bid to select an energy-saving technology enterprise for the installation of Wind Assistant Rotors sails. After fierce competition among the top-notch companies in the industry, CMES-Tech emerged as the winner!

Wind Assistant Rotors Order

At the signing ceremony, Wang Lihua, Deputy Director of the Procurement Department/Supply Chain Management Department of Beihai Shipbuilding, and Dr. Huang Guofu, General Manager of CMES-Tech, signed the contract on behalf of their respective organizations. The “325,000DWT VLOC Rotor Sail” Project will install a total of 30 sets of Wind Assistant Rotors sails on six 325,000DWT VLOCs.

According to the deck layout space of the ship, each vessel can install 5 sets of tiltable rotor sails with an outer cylinder specification of 5 meters in diameter and 35 meters in height. This can save more than 1,500 tons of fuel and reduce GHG emissions by more than 4,800 tons per year. This is currently the largest batch order for rotor sails globally, marking a new step in the commercialization of China’s shipborne wind assistant rotors sails.

Dr. Zhou Weixin of the CSSRC expressed his gratitude to Beihai Shipbuilding for its trust and support in his speech. He pointed out that the team of CSSRC and CMES-Tech, with the mission of developing the green shipping industry, has leveraged its research and development advantages. After decades of technological breakthroughs and countless product iterations, energy-saving technology has achieved a leap from following to leading, and the energy-saving device has made a leap from a prototype to a product, gradually realizing commercial mass production.

Dr. Zhou emphasized that on the basis of mutual trust, both parties should set their sights on the goal, concentrate their strengths, and strive to make the Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) a benchmark in the green shipping industry.

General Manager Luo Le of Beihai Shipbuilding highly praised the efforts made by the team of the CSSRC and CMES-Tech for the Wind Assistant Rotors sail project. He looked forward to exploring a greener future in shipping with the signing partners.

The signing of the”325,000DWT VLOC Rotor Sail” Project will further enhance the core competitiveness of domestic shipborne energy-saving devices in the global market, accelerate the development of diversified products in the energy-saving device field, and strengthen the research and development talent pool. It will make a positive contribution to the independent and controllable development of key technologies for green ships in China.

Relevant department heads from Beihai Shipbuilding, CSSRC, China Shipbuilding Rail Transit, CMES-Tech, and other units attended the signing ceremony.

MAST Maritime Services S.A. in cooperation with their exclusive Principals CSSC Shanghai Marine Energy Saving Technology Co., Ltd. (CMES-Tech) held a seminar session for the Greek Shipping community in Athens on May 25, 2023 followed by a dinner to foster greater interest in energy efficiency improvement, familiarize the participants with the new technological advancements and provide a forum to exchange views on the decarbonisation plan of the industry. The midday session was attended by technically oriented executives from reputable shipmanagement and shipowning companies and senior personnel from shipbuilding and ship classification societies.

The seminar included a couple of technical presentations through interaction with the participants and case studies on actual existing projects. Discussions revolved around hydrodynamic energy efficiency technologies; innovative Air Layer systems; capturing wind energy; and the methodology to achieve the optimal vessel performance enhancement.

The first part of the seminar focused on the Energy Saving Devices (ESD) and the proven savings that shipowners can benefit from CMES-Tech products and engineering studies. In addition, the second part introduced new technologies that have already initiated to be implemented including Air Layer system for hull drag reduction and also Rotor Sails to harvest wind energy.

Overall, the event was an opportunity for CMES-Tech to exchange views with the participants through detailed discussion on decarbonisation plan and ease the path to greener ships.

Zhoushan Huafeng Shipyard is an impressive facility located in Baiquan Town, Dinghai District, Zhoushan City. It boasts a vast area of 447,336 square meters and a total coastline of 1,728 meters, making it one of the largest shipyards in China.

With over 4,000 employees, the shipyard is well-equipped to provide comprehensive vessel maintenance, modification, and repair services to its clients. Posidonia 2022, the world’s most prestigious biennial shipping event welcomed back the global maritime community. Following the pandemic-induced cancellation of the 2020 event. A total of 2,000 exhibitors from 88 countries and 24 National Pavilions from Europe, North America, and Asia displayed their products and showcased their maritime credentials to thousands of visitors from all around the world.

At the MAST booth, some of the company’s exclusive partners had the opportunity to attend, providing bold and fruitful outcomes. Representation of Headway Technology Group was also there since MAST is the exclusive agent for the innovative developments of the Qingdao company. Nonetheless, attendees from Marine Shaft enriched the booth, in view of their recently signed agreement.

Posidonia Running Event 2022

The 3rd Posidonia Running Event took place on Sunday 5 June 2022, in Piraeus, the country’s largest port. Specifically, 1,800 runners representing the international maritime community joined forces for a good cause and enjoyed a day of fun!

Considering the continuous participation of the MAST team in sports events, the 2022 Posidonia Running Event was a no-brainer. Hence, offering even more excitement and networking opportunities.

Proceeds of the race will again be donated to the Municipality of Piraeus, the Public Benefit Municipal Corporation of Piraeus, and other organizations.

Decarbonization Seminar in Posidonia

MAST Maritime Services, organized and offered the opportunity to attend the seminar: Get in line with the industry’s decarbonization plan. Hence, along with Lloyd’s Register, Rightship and CMES-Tech they enlightened the paths to a more sustainable future according to the new measures (EEXI, CII).

Decarbonization of the world fleet is one of the biggest challenges today. Therefore, EEXI and CII have been set to drastically minimize the carbon footprint. 
It is not incorrect that the new measures will influence the technical and therefore the operational profile of the vessels. Having said this, we can’t ignore the fact that, Shipowners are bouncing from one solution to another without a stable plan. 

In this regard and in order to address the matter, the seminar incorporated speakers from; a Classification society, a 3rd party Maritime Organisation and an Energy Saving Technology developing company.
